ECONOMY NEWS

  • Louisiana saw jobless claims rise last week from 862 to 892 as the U.S. Department of Labor noted a national total of 208,000 claims, with some states showing larger shifts (Georgia up 161.9% and Delaware down 55.5%).  The Daily Advertiser

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health inspectors cited sanitation and plumbing problems at two Lafayette Parish restaurants (Dec. 29 to Jan. 5). They said the issues may require improved safety measures to protect diners.  The Daily Advertiser

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In October, Lafayette home prices rose to a median of $240,000—a 4.3% increase from September—with single-family homes reaching $250,000 while condominiums fell to $128,000; recorded sales climbed to 296 properties totaling $93.6 million.  The Daily Advertiser

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Daily Advertiser invites voters to select the Athlete of the Week for Jan. 5-11 from high school sports action; nominations include basketball, soccer and wrestling, and ballots must be cast by 9 a.m. Friday to honor standout local athletes.  The Daily Advertiser
  • LSU women's basketball beat No. 2 Texas 70-65 on Sunday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge. Coach Kim Mulkey said the win is her biggest regular season victory over a top-ranked team and stressed every game matters.  The Daily Advertiser
