  • Acadiana community leaders celebrated Dr. King's legacy today with events at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center (including an 8:30 a.m. flag-raising breakfast, health screenings, vendor booths, and plate lunches from Reggie’s Soul Food) and a parade with speeches in Opelousas.  News 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents attended the 40th Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast at the MLK Center on Monday, Jan. 19 (with musical selections, flag raising by Boy Scout and Cub Scout groups, and award presentations including remarks by Mayor-President Monique Boulet).  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After benefitting from the Louisiana Educate Program at UL Lafayette (a program that supports low-income students), Heaven Adams became a 10th grade English teacher at Carencro High School and was recently named New Teacher of the Year for her strong classroom connections.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A stretch of Bonin Road near Bluebonnet Drive will close from Tuesday, Jan. 20 to Friday, Jan. 23 for drainage repairs as crews replace a deteriorated pipe with a properly sized concrete pipe. Drivers should plan alternate routes (detours are posted) to maintain roadway safety.  News 15

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kidney Kids Day will be held at Ragin Cajun's women’s basketball game at the Cajundome on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. as free admission invites local community members to celebrate pediatric kidney patients + raise awareness about chronic kidney disease.  KATC
  • Orangetheory Fitness is offering a membership deal for $2 per day through Saturday, Jan. 31 to help residents stick to their New Year’s resolutions. The fitness program provides expert coaching and workouts for all levels.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Updated national dietary guidelines now feature a revised food pyramid that emphasizes protein and healthy fats over traditional grains - a shift based on current nutrition science. Health officials say many in Louisiana still overlook these tips, with the state recording a 39% adult obesity rate.  News 15

  • Chef Don Green of Acadian Superette makes his famous Reuben sandwich with in house smoked pastrami and a special spicy sauce while offering a creative Bahn mi with pork belly and crisp vegetables. The restaurant is at 600 Lamar St. and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (a local favorite).  The Advocate

  • St. Thomas More wrestlers placed second at the Louisiana Classic (in Gonzales) last weekend with 230 points, nearly matching Catholic High’s 237, and secured individual wins by Foster Peterson, Jonas Rebstock and Zach Cestia to become the only Acadiana team in the top five.  The Advocate
  • Area high school sports featured a Friday basketball game at Ascension Episcopal where Westminster-Lafayette guard Ben Andres played a key role, and Monday’s schedule lists boys and girls basketball matchups plus boys and girls soccer contests with NWEST’s 73-61 win over Liberty highlighted in the stats.  The Advocate
