  • Friends of the Lafayette Public Library will host its Semiannual Book Sale at Heymann Performing Arts Center from Mar. 19 through Mar. 21 with gently used books sold for $1 and $2; members have a pre-sale on Mar. 18 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Proceeds help support the library.  BY Local News
  • The annual African American Heritage Parade, celebrating Black History Month, will roll on Mar. 1 at 2 p.m. along Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Parkway as organizers ask community members to donate unwanted Mardi Gras throws (for local kids' benefit).  KATC
  • Mark Gee, born with polio, used long days at the barn (teaching his nephew) to help him become the first African American jockey in the Kentucky Derby in 79 years; his story shows how local determination turns challenges into historic achievements.  KATC

CULTURE NEWS

  • First Lutheran Church in Lafayette offered drive-thru ashes on Ash Wednesday so busy families could quickly observe this tradition & avoid long waits. The service recorded over 1,000 participants including 19 dogs and continues a growing trend.  KATC
  • Lagniappe Ladies invites women over 30 to join its dance sisterhood via a four-week trial program starting with a Meet & Greet on Wednesday, Mar. 18. The group, known for custom pink costumes & community performances, aims to grow membership while offering fitness and fun.  KATC

  • UL Lafayette Assistant Professor Dr. Anna Jilla has been chosen by the American Academy of Audiology for the Outstanding Early Career Award for her work in research, education, and advancing hearing healthcare.   • Early hummingbird migration is underway in Louisiana as a ruby-throated hummingbird was spotted on Feb. 14 — bird watchers can expect more arrivals through April when the birds move north to breed.  The Daily Advertiser

  • The 200 block of N. Buchanan Street in Lafayette will be closed to traffic Monday, Feb. 23 through Friday, Feb. 27 for roadway repairs by Lafayette Utilities Systems contractor The Patch Group.
