COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of Move the Mindset and Lafayette Parish Community Remembrance Project unveiled a historic marker on March 29th at the Welcome Center in Carencro to honor Louis Senegal, Antoine Domingue and other lynching victims, marking the first such remembrance in Lafayette parish. Community members gathered at the event where speakers, including a representative from the Equal Justice Initiative, stressed the significance of the commemoration.  The Daily Advertiser

  • The Youngsville Chamber of Commerce launched Coffee and Keynotes, a quarterly educational series for business leaders, with the first session held March 28 that focused on cash flow management and was led by Treasurer Morial Vallot of Greenhouse Business Services.  BY Local News

CRIME NEWS

  • Six Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Correctional Deputies received treatment after a suspect, Reeshawn Arnold (32), threw a white powder confirmed as fentanyl at them during a booking process on March 27 at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, and Arnold now faces seven charges including criminal negligence, possession of a controlled substance, introduction of contraband, resisting an officer, and obstruction of justice.  BY Local News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana voters rejected four proposed constitutional amendments in Saturday's election by at least a 60—40 margin. The proposals aimed to change specialty courts, tax codes, juvenile charges, and judge elections while voters also cast ballots on several local offices and tax measures across multiple parishes.  KATC
  • Lafayette Consolidated Government and Keep Lafayette Beautiful will host the annual Paper Shredding Day for safe disposal of sensitive documents at the Robicheaux Recreation Center on April 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Residents must bring only personal documents free of binders and clips — only stapled papers allowed — and limit submissions to three kitchen-size garbage bags per household.  BY Local News
  • Lafayette Parish voters did not pass two property tax renewals for road and bridge repairs and public health services during Saturday's election. The vote means the parish must find new ways to fund these essential services.  KLFY
  • The Louisiana Secretary of State's office updates live vote totals every 90 seconds for statewide, legislative and local races including Lafayette. Residents can check the website to view current results as the election continues.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey said star Flau'jae Johnson will play in today's Elite Eight game against UCLA at 2 p.m. CT after she recovered from an eye injury she sustained during the Sweet 16 win over NC State; Johnson led the team in scoring coming into the tournament and is ready to add more on the floor.  The Daily Advertiser
