COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Gethsemane Easter egg hunt hosted by the Children and Youth Department runs from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at 701 E Pinhook Rd—featuring free food, a gaming truck, a DJ, a petting zoo and a train ride. The City Wide Easter egg hunt at PA Davis Park on 120 Dawn Street is set for April 19 with sessions from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for toddlers and special needs individuals and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for children ages 6 to 12.  KATC
  • Grayson Stepanek, director of marketing and communications for Goodwill Acadiana and a 20 Under 40 honoree, explained in a Q&A how emotional intelligence and being comfortable with discomfort fuel his professional growth—he also led the Greater Good Donation Drive that collected 3,252 pounds from over 20 student organizations. He said his Lafayette roots and strong community ties keep him motivated to make a lasting impact.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Parc International in downtown Lafayette is receiving a ($1.6 million) upgrade ahead of Festival International de Louisiane (April 23-27) as workers pressure wash and repaint the park while planning further renovations after the festival.  The Advocate
  • Today, designs for the Louisiana Music Museum at 121 W. Vermilion St. are on display at the ACA during ArtWalk downtown as ACA director Sam Oliver explained. The project—led by Moliere Chappuis Architects—will add a new south side entrance and a dance hall–styled space, with groundbreaking set early next year and completion expected mid-2027.  The Advocate

  • Average crawfish prices now are $3.14 for live and $5.55 for boiled, and The Crawfish App co-founder Laney King said more retailers selling ahead of Easter mean buyers should reserve sacks soon—ensuring that competition drives the prices lower as the holiday approaches.  KLFY

  • The Lafayette Parish School System named Brandon Bonner as the new principal of Charles Burke Elementary School on April 11; he brings over a decade of experience (including roles at Judice Middle School and Dr. Raphael A. Baranco Elementary) and a strong record of leadership to his new position.  BY Local News
  • The Lafayette Parish School System announced that Mrs. Ginger Richard has been named Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction after 21 years of service in various educational roles—she will begin after Janine LaFleur retires in June. She will work to support high-quality academic programs for every student.  BY Local News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi River is rising to flood stage for the first time since 2019 as heavy rains in the Ohio Valley force flood-fight measures while 5th Louisiana Levee District President Reynold Minsky and his team monitor levees and keep gates open to prevent soil erosion and protect camps along the unprotected side. The river will reach flood stage today from the Arkansas line to Baton Rouge at the Natchez gauge—Vidalia officials have also set up temporary Hesco basket walls to secure the riverfront.  The Daily Advertiser
