- ➤ Registration is now open for Camp Ignite 2025, a five-week summer camp for children ages 5 to 14 that will run from June 9 to July 18 with a break from June 30 to July 4 (for Independence Day observance) at the Girard Recreation Center (500 Girard Park Drive). The camp charges $125 per camper and offers healthy snacks, lunch, and outdoor and creative activities Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. City of Lafayette
- ➤ Joelle Nixon, owner and counselor at Joiful Counseling Services, was named one of the Top 20 Under 40 Acadiana Leaders and will be honored at a May 2 banquet. In a Q&A, she said a strong community of Black women shaped her work in counseling, teaching at UL, and her role as president-elect of Louisiana Counselors for Social Justice — values that guide her career. - ➤ Viva La Waffle will close its Kaliste Saloom location in late May as co-owner Tim Metcalf said the business was not working out—he urged residents to support local restaurants to help them improve their services. The Daily Advertiser

- ➤ Seven incarcerated students earned technical welding diplomas on April 10 through a partnership between South Louisiana Community College and the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office at the Port of West St. Mary's workforce training facility near Baldwin. They may continue their education at SLCC upon release to pursue further certifications and improve their job prospects. The Daily Advertiser

- ➤ Louisiana residents 18 and older must obtain a Real ID for domestic air travel starting May 7, with most paying $32.25 and those 70 and older paying $18.75. Residents will need to supply documents proving their full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, lawful status and two proofs of address at an OMV field office, Public Tag Agent or title and notary office+ extra fees apply for title and notary offices. - ➤ The deadline to file individual income tax returns and claim a $1,400 stimulus check ended on April 15 in Louisiana. Taxpayers had to file accurate returns on time to avoid IRS penalties+ late fees, with extensions allowing filings only until Oct. 15 while payments remained due by April 15. The Daily Advertiser
