CULTURE NEWS

  • Sheryl Cormier, known as the Queen of Cajun Music, mourns her 62-year marriage after her husband Russell died on April 8 following a long illness. Tributes have spread via social media and local jam sessions in Carencro as the band she founded continues to honor their legacy.  The Advocate
  • Hugh Thompson was a retired helicopter pilot who settled in Broussard after his heroic act in Vietnam and became known for fighting for veterans’ benefits at his office on Pinhook and Jefferson. Local biographer Trent Angers detailed his story linking Lafayette’s past to a legacy of moral courage.  The Advocate
  • Day three of the 40th Festival International de Louisiane in downtown Lafayette on Thursday, Apr. 23 featured food, music and street art with acts like Amis du Teche, Beausejour from New Brunswick and Dragon Knights Stiltwalkers. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new analysis from Zumper shows Lafayette apartment listings rose 8% from March 2025's median of $1,240 to a typical $1,334. One-bedroom rents remained at $1,000 while two-bedroom listings increased 9% to $1,200 (from $1,100) as the study covered all available apartments.  The Daily Advertiser

SPORTS NEWS

  • UL baseball lost 3-2 to Marshall on Sunday at Lamson Park, with coach Alyson Habetz frustrated by missed win chances. Thanks to Coastal Carolina's loss, the team qualified for the Sun Belt Tournament in Lafayette and will complete its regular season at South Alabama on Thursday.  The Advocate
  • UL softball won 5-3 over Marshall on Saturday at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park & clinched the weekend series, with the final game played on Sunday.  The Advocate
  • The UL Ragin' Cajuns lost 8-3 to Arkansas State in Jonesboro after a two-run lead faded late in the game. UL now faces a five-game homestand starting Tuesday with Southern and Nicholls.  The Advocate
  • Teurlings Catholic Rebels swept Leesville in a Division II select regional series on Friday and Saturday at home, using strong pitching and offense to secure wins. They advanced to the quarterfinals against Loranger, keeping alive their rich tradition as back-to-back state title defenders + honoring a legacy from 1985.  The Advocate
  • The UL Vermilion and White spring football game took place Saturday, Apr. 25 at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium in Lafayette. Running back JJ Garner led the White team to a 24-14 victory with a 70‐yard touchdown run.  The Advocate
  • The Daily Advertiser launched its Athlete of the Week poll for high school sports covering April 20-26 in Lafayette and nearby parishes. Voting closes at 9 a.m. Friday, and readers can email nominations with statistics and a photo for next week's ballot to sports reporter Shannon Belt.  The Daily Advertiser
  • UL's Malan Potgieter had a record season with top-four finishes in 8 of 10 tournaments, including two Louisiana Classics wins & a performance at the Maridoe Intercollegiate.
