ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A storm on Friday brought heavy rain and strong winds that caused a tree to fall on a mobile home near E. Broussard Road (Johnston Street) in Lafayette Parish while the Vermilion River reached minor flood stage.  News 15

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Raising Cane's reopened Friday (after an extensive remodel that highlights Lafayette culture) on Kaliste Saloom Road near Ambassador Caffery Parkway. The restaurant held giveaways and donated a $1,500 check to Miles Perret Cancer Services during the reopening.  News 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scott Middle School hosted its final Community French Table event of the school year, allowing French Immersion students to practice conversation with local French speakers (reinforcing language and cultural exchange) in a real-world setting.  News 15
  • St. Cecilia School in Broussard broke ground on a new gym Friday amid rainy weather to expand its physical education space and host community events—its master site plan addresses growing enrollment demands, according to Principal Erin Henry.  News 15
  • The University of Louisiana at Lafayette cut the ribbon on the REDII Works Fab Lab at LITE, a free maker-space with a 3-D printer, laser cutter, and computers to boost skills for small business entrepreneurs — the project is part of the REDII initiative funded by a USDA grant.  News 15

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Federal regulators and scientists are investigating north Louisiana earthquakes linked to oil and gas brine disposal after a 4.9 quake hit Red River Parish on March 5; researchers are now installing seismometers and reviewing injection well practices to protect underground drinking water.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • Acadiana Renaissance swept Loyola Prep in a doubleheader at Youngsville after a thunderstorm delayed play for one hour; Sebastian Rideaux pitched a complete game in a 2 to 1 win and the team survived a late rally in game two to clinch a berth in the state semifinals.  The Advocate
  • The Region 2 Class 4A Track and Field Meet took place at Cecilia High School on Wednesday, April 29 featuring events such as triple jump, long jump, and discus — top athletes from Northside, St. Thomas More, and other schools claimed leading spots.  The Advocate
  • Teurlings Catholic baseball announced it will part ways with head coach Brooks Badeaux after this season and the Rebels boosted their playoff drive with a 6-1 win on May 2. The team is focused on earning a three-peat in the LHSAA Select Division II championship.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Jonathan Lucroy’s retired No.21 jersey ceremony inspired the Ragin’ Cajuns to sweep a Saturday doubleheader against Georgia State at Russo Park, winning 14-1 and 5-1. His honored number now hangs with Ron Guidry’s No.3 and Tony Robichaux’s No.36 — symbols of the program’s legacy.  The Advocate
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Delbrey delivered 5⅓ innings with no earned runs in UL’s win over South Alabama in Mobile on Saturday. UL finished as the No. 8 seed for the Sun Belt Tournament in Lafayette and will face No. 9 Troy on Wednesday.  The Advocate
  • Teurlings Catholic advanced to the state semifinals after sweeping Loranger 6-1 in the Division II select quarterfinals Saturday at home. The Rebels (25-12-1) will next face the winner from St. Charles/E.D. White as they aim for a third straight state title.  The Advocate
