CRIME NEWS

  • A fatal shooting early Saturday morning in a parking lot outside Legends left 30-year-old Jonovan Dauphine dead after he shot his 27-year-old partner Samantha Breaux and then took his own life just after 8 a.m. near the intersection of Johnston Street and Lana Drive, and police are investigating the motive.  KATC
  • A Sunset man, Jonovan Dauphine aged 30, is believed to have shot his partner, Samantha Breaux aged 27, then turned the gun on himself outside the Legends bar on Saturday — police said.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Secretary of State updates vote totals every 90 seconds as ballots are counted in the May election for statewide, legislative and local races. Lafayette voters can check live results online for local contests and metro areas like New Orleans — Baton Rouge to stay informed.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Conservative lawmakers urged Congress to stop provider taxes, saying they artificially raise Medicaid payments while a big tax bill is to be voted on by Memorial Day. Louisiana health care leaders warned the cut would force the state to lower benefits, risking coverage for many rural patients—especially those with low incomes.  The Advocate

  • The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball team will begin play in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the Troy Softball Complex in Troy — they earned a bye after winning nine of the last 10 conference games and will face App State in the quarterfinal round.  KLFY
  • After play resumed following a lightning delay, St. Thomas More defeated Mt. Carmel 6-1 in seven innings and will face John Curtis at 3:00 p.m. today in Sulphur—Opelousas Catholic edged St. John 1-0 and will play Holy Savior Menard at 3:00 p.m. today.  KLFY
