BUSINESS NEWS

  • Last Friday, the FCC approved Gray Media’s plan to acquire Lafayette TV stations KADN/KLAF along with its purchase of KATC, giving the company a duopoly. The deal may boost local news coverage if the stations combine staffs.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cathedral of St. John, a Lafayette landmark since 1916, showcases Acadian roots with its twin spires, stained glass, and historic cemetery — the active parish remains a center for local faith and heritage.  The Daily Advertiser
  • The Acadian Cultural Center in Lafayette (temporarily closed due to air conditioning issues) preserves Acadian history with interactive exhibits and music while visitors can head to the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice for weekly live programs. EDUCATION NEWS

  • First graders at Myrtle Place Elementary published their bilingual book 'La Bataille Magique' as part of their French immersion program; the students celebrated with an autograph party on April 30 at school.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Forty-four LPSS seniors were awarded scholarships totaling $59,000 at the Superintendent’s Scholarship Golf Tournament, which helps cover college and training costs. The next tournament is set for Friday, June 5 at The Wetlands Golf Course, where community members and businesses can register to participate.  BY Local News

  • Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet invites high school students to apply for the Youth Advisory Council from May 4 through July 10, with selected members meeting monthly starting in August to learn about local government + engage with community leaders.  KATC

  • Today, Lafayette restaurants and bars mark Cinco de Mayo with drink specials, live music and family-friendly events. Agave serves $5 margaritas from 5 p.m. at 200 E Vermilion St and Superior Grill begins programming at 11 a.m. — others offer varied deals across town.  The Advocate
  • On May 10, Lafayette restaurants offer special Mother’s Day brunches with multi-course dining and bottomless mimosas + a Cajun twist on classics. Reservations are required due to limited seating at favorites like Charley G’s, The French Press, and Market Eatz.  The Advocate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from Construction Coverage shows that buying a home in Lafayette remains slightly more expensive than renting, with a gap narrowed to $52 from about $200 in past years. In neighboring parishes like Iberia and Acadia, mortgage payments are lower than rents.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northside Christian softball clinched its third state championship on May 4 in Sulphur by beating Claiborne Christian 10-4, with pitcher Brooklyn Hebert leading the team. Four area teams competed in the tournament as others did not capture a title.  The Daily Advertiser
  • The Sun Belt Conference softball tournament will take place from May 6 to May 9 at Yvette Girouard Field in Lafayette.
