COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The community met at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Lafayette to honor two Acadiana officers who died from friendly fire in the past year. Lafayette Police Sr. Cpl. Segus Jolivette died during a standoff in July and Rayne Police Lt. Allen Noochie Credeur died while serving a warrant, and Lt. Bridget Carn said the service helped everyone remember their sacrifice.  News 15

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Since January, work has been done on the Camellia Boulevard site near River Ranch for a possible Trader Joe's store, and the Board of Zoning Adjustment approved a key variance on January 9—clearing a major hurdle. The plan also includes a request for 172 parking spaces and a 165-foot building setback from the roadway instead of 80—showing progress in bringing the grocer to Lafayette.  The Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • Jeanerette police arrested JMichael Gray, 21, of Franklin — accused of firing shots near St. Charles Elementary School on May 6 while carrying a high-powered rifle, handgun and armor-piercing rounds — and he faces charges for violating firearm zone laws, illegal weapon use, criminal trespass and resisting an officer.  News 15

  • Lafayette Catholics gathered at St. John Cathedral today to celebrate Chicago native Robert Prevost—elected as Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope—after Pope Francis died hours after his Easter blessing. Local leaders and parishioners said the historic event fills Louisiana with pride.  News 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Graduation ceremonies in Lafayette Parish will take place from May 15th to May 21st at the Cajundome or Cajundome Convention Center—visitors at the Cajundome must follow a clear-bag policy and park at Cajun Field.  The Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in St. Landry Parish are still dealing with backed up floodwaters 24 hours after heavy rain — debris from trees is blocking drainage in some areas. Parish officials said work is underway to improve drainage, though progress remains slow.  KLFY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers and Gov. Jeff Landry began cutting tax breaks after a special tax session because in 2023 the state gave away $1 in exemptions for every $2 collected, costing $7.5 billion—changes aimed at ending costly deductions, exemptions and exclusions. Legislators repealed programs like the Quality Jobs Program while proposing new credits for motor vehicle manufacturers and National Guard employers.  The Advocate
