CRIME NEWS

  • Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Jaelon Broussard on multiple drug charges after deputies executed a search warrant on Rue Ferdinand and Feu Follet Road—seizing nearly 3 lbs of fentanyl, over 9 lbs of meth, and 2 oz of marijuana—and he is held without bond at the Correctional Center.  News 15
  • Former state representative Jack Montoucet was indicted on five federal felony counts—including conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering—in Lafayette on May 21 and is scheduled for arraignment on June 12. Federal investigators used wiretaps during the kickback scheme from May 2020 until June 2022 that involved co-conspirators Dusty Guidry and businessman Leonard Franques, who previously pleaded guilty.  The Advocate
  • A Lafayette grand jury indicted Jarvon Brian Montague, 46, of New Iberia on a second degree murder charge for the suspicious death of Shantee Broussard, 44, after police responded on Feb. 20 to a call on the 300 block of Carmel Drive where paramedics attempted CPR and an autopsy later found injuries consistent with strangulation—and blunt force trauma during a domestic altercation.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The final commencement ceremonies for the Lafayette Parish School System were held on May 21 at the Cajundome—where the final graduating class of Lafayette High School received their diplomas—and the old campus will be torn down as a new school nears opening next school year.  News 15
  • South Louisiana Community College announced a new partnership with Honda to launch Louisiana’s first automotive training program beginning this fall. The two-year, five-semester course will offer hands-on training on Honda & Acura vehicles & provide internships at local dealerships to prepare students for high-demand careers.  The Advocate
  • Emerson Thom, a visually impaired first grader at Woodvale Elementary, will travel to Los Angeles this summer to compete in the 25th Braille Challenge (against nine other students) and hopes to build on his second-place finish at the state contest in Ruston (where he competed in the spring).  The Advocate
  • South Louisiana Community College will launch Louisiana's only Honda PACT automotive training program this Fall, partnering with Honda to offer a two-year course on Honda and Acura vehicles. The program will provide hands-on training, internships, and manufacturer certifications that prepare students for automotive careers.  The Daily Advertiser

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Stephanie Berault sponsored House Bill 624 to let Louisianans access most benefits through the Louisiana Workforce Commission as part of the One Door plan. Lawmakers say the paired bills will shift $384 million and about 1,500 DCFS positions to the new system—officials say no jobs or services will be cut—while the proposals await Senate approval.  The Advocate
