COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet announced the return of the Lafayette Stars and Stripes event at Parc International on Friday, July 4, with gates opening at 5:00 p.m. and fireworks set for 9:00 p.m.—the celebration will feature free family fun with kids’ activities, pop-up shops, food trucks, and live music.  KATC
  • United Way of Acadiana will launch its annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive on June 17 — presented by Hancock Whitney Bank — to deliver supplies for teachers and students across five parishes; local businesses and individuals can sign up as drop-off locations or volunteer during the drive through July 17.  KATC

CRIME NEWS

  • The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office arrested John Alexander, 43, from Breaux Bridge on over 400 counts of theft and identity theft—charges that include stealing a gas card and using it several hundred times to fuel vehicles.  News 15

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette Parish residents will drop off unwanted chemicals and electronics during Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, May 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 1229 NW Evangeline Thruway—entering from Donlon Avenue and recycling rinsed glass food and beverage containers through a new BackYard Sapphire partnership.  KLFY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette leaders are studying a plan to store rainwater under Johnston Street to help ease downtown flooding, following a flash flood this spring that stressed the new drainage on Lee Avenue. Mayor-President Monique Boulet said Jimmy Ricks of Southeast Engineering is modeling the project, which could capture 20—30 percent of stormwater during heavy rains.  The Advocate

  • Day 2 of David Thibodaux’s Summer Hoops League was held at David Thibodaux Stem Magnet High School as local and out-of-area teams played in 17-minute halves to build team chemistry—preparations that will help them for the 2026 season.
