CULTURE NEWS

  • The Southwest Louisiana Juneteenth Committee in Lafayette is hosting free events to honor African American freedom starting tomorrow with the Opal Lee Unity Walk at 10 a.m. along a two-and-a-half-mile route from the Hyman Center—followed by a nearly sold-out Miss Juneteenth Beauty Pageant on June 20 and a full-day music festival at Hyman Park on June 21 with live music and food vendors.  KATC
  • The 23rd annual Creole Culture Day will take place this Sunday at Vermilionville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the free event will feature cooking demonstrations, film screenings and live music to celebrate Creole heritage, with sponsors including Lafayette Consolidated Government, Acadiana Center for the Arts, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Foundation and Louisiana CREOLE Inc.  KATC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Senate recently passed a resolution honoring longtime Acadian Ambulance CEO Richard Zuschlag on the anniversary of his death—he died June 5 from complications following cancer treatment. Sen. Gerald Boudreaux noted his leadership built a company that saved lives and created careers across the state.  The Advocate
  • A bill to ban DEI programs in state agencies and public colleges passed the House after a heated debate two weeks ago but stalled in the Senate when it was returned to the calendar without a committee assignment—Senate President Cameron Henry has not decided its next step as the session nears its end.  The Advocate
  • The Louisiana Senate approved a bill that expands the texting ban to include scrolling through social media and posting images—aiming to curb distracted driving. The House passed the measure in May and it now heads to the governor’s desk—with an exception for emergency calls.  KLFY
  • School board member Jeremy Hidalgo asked the Louisiana Board of Ethics for an opinion on whether vendors sponsoring customer appreciation events at his bar—The Barrel—violate state rules when they work with the board. The Ethics Board will review the matter today.  The Advocate
  • All Louisiana judges must now complete a one-hour domestic violence training every other year as mandated by the Louisiana Supreme Court. The training—provided by the Louisiana Protective Order Registry and the Louisiana Judicial College—is required after a recommendation to address the rise in domestic violence incidents.  KLFY
