CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Iberia Parish sheriff's deputies arrested Chinese national +Pengfei Tian, 29 from Flushing, New York+ on Monday for running a scam that used social media to lure victims into a fake high-yield gold investment opportunity and he faces charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal transmission of monetary funds, theft, money laundering, obstruction of justice and racketeering while being held at Iberia Parish Jail. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cecilia Water Corporation is under a boil water advisory after a main water line collapsed near its plant, affecting customers on the East side of Bayou Teche, the Cecilia area, and nearby neighborhoods. In Iberia, the Franklin Water System exceeded safe turbidity levels several times from November through March, and officials are working to restore compliance—residents should follow local guidelines. - ➤ The Legislature passed two bills that create a One Door system for benefits where residents can get food stamps, TANF, and unemployment aid in one location—HB624 assigns SNAP to the Department of Health and renames the Workforce Commission as Louisiana Works while HB617 moves some responsibilities from the Department of Children & Family Services. Gov. Jeff Landry must sign the bills for them to become law, and officials said the changes will not affect eligibility or jobs. The Advocate
- ➤ Louisiana lawmakers passed two bills that bolster the state’s role in immigration enforcement—one bill mandates that state agencies track and report the legal status of public service users, and the other makes it a crime to block federal immigration actions with penalties of fines and jail time. The measures now head to Gov. Jeff Landry for his signature and will take effect Aug. 1. The Daily Advertiser
- ➤ LPSB member Jeremy Hidalgo defended his actions after a Louisiana ethics board advisory opinion barred school vendors from sponsoring events at his Broussard bar—he said he asked for guidance and acted transparently. He also noted that he will stop using vendors who do business with the school system to avoid any conflicts. The Current
- ➤ The Louisiana Board of Ethics ruled in a Friday meeting that Lafayette School Board member Jeremy Hidalgo's bar cannot allow school district vendors to sponsor customer appreciation nights—Hidalgo said the bar will continue the events with businesses that do not work with the school district.
