COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lafayette Parish residents can visit APN Outreach Ministry at 315 Johnston Street each Monday for free food, haircuts, showers and clothes. Construction on the Gisele Place bridge has begun with a $900K project funded by the Parish Road and Bridge Millage and set to finish early 2026, while in St. Martin Parish more than 100 anglers will compete in the G.G. King Bass Tactix National Championship at Doiron's Landing from June 19th to 21st—contestants vie for a $10,000 prize and up to $100,000 in scholarship funds.  KATC

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 14 at about 11:40 a.m., Broussard Police responded to a shooting on the 1200 block of Young Street when an altercation led to a suspect producing and discharging a firearm, striking a victim who was taken to a local hospital in critical condition—18-year-old Donald Richard was arrested and charged with attempted manslaughter.  BY Local News
  • A Texas man, Sergio Gracia, 52, was arrested after Lafayette police stopped his car on I-10 near the I-49 interchange at mile marker 103A on Friday at 8:30 p.m.—the search revealed 21,063 grams of cocaine with a street value of $2,106,300 and he now faces charges of possession with intent to distribute.  KLFY
  • Donald Richard (18) of Broussard was arrested on a $75,000 bond and charged with attempted manslaughter after a Saturday morning fight on the 1200 block of Young Street led to a shooting that left a victim in critical condition.  KLFY
  • Lafayette police stopped a vehicle on I-10 near the I-49 interchange on June 13th at 8:30 p.m. and seized over 45 pounds of cocaine valued at over $2 million—leading to the arrest of 52-year-old Sergio Gracia Jr. from Texas on possession with intent to distribute charges—in an ongoing investigation.  News 15

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michael DeSelle and Becky Richard sued Lafayette Consolidated Government on Monday in federal court, arguing that the ordinance banning short-term rentals in certain neighborhoods violates their constitutional rights—specifically the Takings Clause and Equal Protection Clause—and asking the court to stop its enforcement and award damages.  KATC
  • The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear arguments from Chevron & Exxon as they ask to move coastal wetlands lawsuits to federal court. The decision may affect 42 cases, including one with a $745 million jury award for coastal damage in Plaquemines Parish.  The Advocate

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Louisiana has no law setting a minimum age for a child to be left home alone — parents must decide if their child is mature enough, with the National SAFE KIDS Campaign advising that kids under 12 should not be unsupervised and that older siblings should be at least 15.  The Daily Advertiser

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local entrepreneur Jacoby Landry purchased Northgate Mall and will redevelop the space into a mixed-use center featuring small retailers, a boutique medi-spa, a fitness center and indoor pickleball courts. He will begin structural stabilization and tenant retention in the coming months — a move supported by the Lafayette Economic Development Authority and the Lafayette Public Trust Financing Authority.  KATC
