COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A job fair for formerly incarcerated individuals will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, July 16 at the Heymann Convention Center at 1373 South College Rd—organizers expect community groups and employers to offer job opportunities and resources that help reduce recidivism.  The Daily Advertiser
  • In Vermilion Parish, the sheriff’s office launched a new mobile app that provided real-time safety alerts and community updates while in Lafayette Parish a new roundabout opened at Louisiana Avenue and Gloria Switch Road as construction on nearby access continued. The Acadiana Center for the Arts introduced two programs for local artists—one offering a free workshop with a July 14 deadline and the other inviting mural proposals for the Children’s Museum of Acadiana with a July 31 deadline.  KATC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist died after colliding with a vehicle on June 23 at the intersection of Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Galbert Road in Lafayette, police said, with the rider taken to Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 p.m. while the driver sustained minor to moderate injuries (testing for impairment is underway).  News 15
  • Two people died when a car running a red light crashed into an 18-wheeler at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Ambassador Caffery Parkway in Broussard at 10:20 p.m. Saturday and police are awaiting toxicology results.  KATC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lafayette Idol held its Season 2 final on Saturday at Acadiana for the Arts with over 300 guests watching as 25 finalists competed for a $2,500 prize and Lafayette native Austin Reaux won by a few points after a three-way tie. Season 3 auditions will open in July + they will offer a $3,000 grand prize.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette Consolidated Government has secured over $7.9 million in state funding for infrastructure and development projects on Heymann Park, Johnston Street and the I-49 Connector. Legislators passed bills that allow merit-based police promotions, speed up cleanup of blighted properties and update zoning rules—Mayor President Monique Blanco Boulet said these measures will help the parish grow smarter and faster.  KLFY
  • LCG installed five new trash receptacles at J. Wallace James Playground using a Keep Louisiana Beautiful grant to reduce litter and improve the park for local families (a follow-up litter scan will measure the impact). The statewide program provided 285 bins to 60 organizations to help clean public spaces.  City of Lafayette
