ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Lafayette man was injured when his recalled Anker PowerCore 10000 power bank exploded in his pocket on June 18 in the 1000 block of East Willow Street — the overheating device set his clothes on fire and officials urged users to stop using the recalled model.  The Advocate

  • Lafayette man Lance Hopson—39—is charged with hit and run in Youngsville after an incident early Thursday afternoon.  KLFY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana colleges will receive $610 million for campus construction and $75 million for research, campus security, and special projects in the new state budget that starts next week, while the University of Louisiana System will get $175 million—up from $136 million—to renovate key buildings at Louisiana Tech and UL Lafayette.  The Current
  • South Louisiana Community College’s Office of Dual Enrollment launches Train — Connect Acadiana Summer Camp at SoLAcc Lafayette Campus starting July 7 for Lafayette Parish students in 9th, 10th or 11th grade to earn career certifications in trades like welding, HVAC and culinary arts. Spots will fill on a first-come, first-served basis with applications due by July 4.  KATC

  • Louisiana residents have nearly reached the end of termite swarm season as most swarming nights have passed—though a few nights still show some activity. Local pest control officials advise homeowners to keep using current bait treatments and check for mud tubes to guard against wood damage.  The Advocate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new report by ATTOM Data Solutions shows that the median home or condo price in Lafayette Parish has risen to $232,000 while buyers need $55,033 to afford a home, compared to owner wages averaging $58,097 and a $3,000 gap that is $1,000 smaller than last year's figure. The study finds that buying a home now takes 26.5% of annual wages—up from 22.5% historically—and this trend is common in many parishes.  The Advocate
