BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, two KFC locations in Lafayette and one in New Iberia closed abruptly. Customers found closure notices at the restaurants on Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Kaliste Saloom Road and at the New Iberia site—no official explanation was given.  News 15
  • On July 3, Lafayette held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Vino Wine and Liquor on South College Road in the Oil Center. The store, launched by the same owners of a nearby dry cleaners, offered special pricing and a rewards program (as announced) to help local residents shop easily for wine and liquor.  News 15

CRIME NEWS

  • Lafayette police are still seeking help to solve a hit-and-run that killed 37-year-old Christopher Smith on West Gilman Road on July 4 after midnight — his mother, Sheryl Scott, continues to urge anyone with information to come forward.  News 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SoLAcc received a $10K grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to expand its Literacy Matters program in eight Acadiana parishes — the free adult classes help build reading skills, let learners earn a high school equivalency diploma, and boost job opportunities.  The Daily Advertiser

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette Consolidated Government announced last week its updated emergency operations plan that outlines how Lafayette prepares for, responds to, and recovers from disasters like hurricanes and floods—developed in collaboration with the LSU Stephenson Disaster Management Institute. It is now available online to boost coordination among municipal departments, public safety agencies and healthcare systems.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed West Nile virus cases in 16 parishes, including two in Acadiana, as of July 2—experts advised residents to use EPA-approved repellent and remove standing water while enjoying Fourth of July activities.  News 15

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lafayette boxer Jessie Fletcher III knocked out Mario Lozana in Arkansas with a decisive second-round finish, keeping his record unbeaten at 10-0. The 28-year-old said the fight was a blur — a challenge against one of his toughest opponents yet.  News 15
  • UL coach Michael Desormeaux noted that transfer quarterback Walker Howard impressed during spring workouts and said everyone in Lafayette asks about him as the Ragin’ Cajuns prepare for the 2025 season. The team also added receiver Shelton Sampson Jr.—a top transfer from LSU—and will open their season Aug. 30 against Rice.  The Advocate
