- ➤ Catholic Charities of Acadiana and KLFY will host a one-day supply drive on July 16 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Regional Disaster Response Warehouse in Scott—collecting large black trash bags, laundry detergent, paper towels, cleaning supplies, diapers in sizes 3 to Pull Ups and $25 Visa gift cards for flood survivors in the Texas Hill Country—donations will then be sent to partner agencies for relief efforts. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ja’Nayah Howard, a student at David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy, won gold in the informative speaking category at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Iowa last June. She won every preliminary round that began on June 16 — she credited her coaches for helping her succeed. KLFY
- ➤ The Lafayette Parish School System is accepting applications for Magnet Academy seats for the 2025-2026 school year, offering programs in arts, healthcare, business and technology. Families are urged to apply early—seats are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. News 15

- ➤ Louisiana U.S. Marine Harry LeBert, 24 when he died in the Battle of Saipan in 1944, was buried on home soil last week at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings. Veterans Affairs Secretary Charlton J. Meginley said the honor ceremony recognized LeBert’s valor and service after 81 years since his death. The Daily Advertiser
- ➤ Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry sent 14 rescue responders from Shreveport—Baton Rouge to help in Texas hill country after flooding killed at least 90 people; at Camp Mystic, 27 children and counselors died and 11 remain missing. The Daily Advertiser
- ➤ The Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Lafayette Parish officials had the right to reject a 50-acre subdivision plan because the road on Bayou Tortue Road could not handle the extra traffic. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The One Big Beautiful Bill signed last month may cut Medicaid funding and put six Acadiana hospitals—serving communities in St. Mary, Acadia, Evangeline and Iberia Parishes—at risk of reducing care. Iberia Medical Center said it is preparing to adapt while policymakers revise the bill to keep local services uninterrupted. KLFY
