CRIME NEWS

  • Former Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope admitted to violating probation in a recent court hearing after he failed to pay restitution and complete community service required following his 2018 conviction for malfeasance in office — he now faces additional jail time.  News 15
  • Former Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope had his six-year probation revoked during an unscheduled Zoom hearing on June 16 — he admitted that the allegations were sufficient to violate his probation and must now serve the original sentence with credit for any time served.  KATC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A winning Powerball ticket that matched all five white balls—sold at a Shop Rite in Carencro on July 5—gives someone a chance to claim $2 million. The unknown winner has 60 days to claim the prize before the funds go to the lottery’s unclaimed prize fund.  News 15

  • With back-to-school season nearing, parents in Lafayette can check teacher certification using the TEACH Louisiana online tool & confirm if a teacher holds a full or temporary license & view detailed certificate information to stay informed on local school qualifications.  The Daily Advertiser
  • The Lafayette Parish School System earned national recognition at the NASRO Conference for its school safety plan that uses a team approach with local law enforcement, training, and policy updates—helping schools remain safe during the 2024–2025 school year. Superintendent Francis Touchet Jr. and board members attended the event to boost partnerships with local agencies.  News 15

  • The Lafayette Police Department is creating a new criminal intelligence analyst role to use data and trends to fight crime — the position received initial approval from the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board but still needs budget approval from City Council.  News 15
