CRIME NEWS

  • A federal grand jury indicted five individuals, including central Louisiana law enforcement officers and a business owner, on charges of bribery, fraud, and visa fraud for allegedly using false police reports from December 26, 2015 to July 15th—if convicted, they could face lengthy prison sentences and heavy fines.  News 15
  • Detectives in Scott arrested a third suspect on July 15 for a June shooting at Cowboys Nightclub that claimed the life of 20-year-old Kylon Calais—Jakalrick Nicholas, 25, of Breaux Bridge faces charges of principal to second-degree murder and obstruction of justice—as the investigation remains active.  News 15
  • Jeanerette man Nyjal Hurst, 32, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges including second-degree murder & several counts of attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, and firearm offenses for the killing of Lafayette SWAT officer Senior Cpl. Segus Jolivette, and he is held on a $19.5 million bond after a July 2024 incident when he took hostages during a warrant service.  The Advocate
  • Byron Starks Jr., 29, died after being struck by a vehicle on SE Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette early Tuesday, July 15 just before 5 a.m.—he was walking along the shoulder and was the son of a well-known Acadiana basketball coach.  News 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LPSS students earned 158 industry-based certifications in June through the Jump Start Summer program — including 55 at DTSMA and credentials in business, emergency medical care, metalworking, electrical trades and automotive safety — as the district advanced workforce readiness. Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. said the credentials built essential technical skills and prepared students for future career opportunities in Lafayette.  BY Local News
