CRIME NEWS

  • On July 23, 2015, a lone gunman fired at Lafayette’s Grand Theater—killing Jillian Johnson and Mayci Breaux and injuring nine before taking his own life—and ten years later the community honors the victims through scholarships and neighborhood projects.  The Advocate
  • One year ago in Jeanerette, a standoff led to the death of Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette, a trained hostage negotiator who is remembered by family and fellow officers for his kindness and dedication, and his legacy is honored with a memorial monument on Camellia Boulevard and a crime bill bearing his name.  KATC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cajundome is hosting Jurassic Quest and Brick Fest Live where families can become certified dinosaur trainers, pet baby dinosaurs, ride Jurassic jeeps and build with life-size brick models. The event runs from noon Friday until 6 p.m. Saturday and today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—tickets are 20% off with code DINO20.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lafayette Consolidated Government presented its budget for next fiscal year, allocating over 800 million dollars to upgrade infrastructure, boost economic development and fund drainage projects. It also supports a home elevation and buyout program — public hearings will begin on August 7th with final adoption planned for September.  KLFY
  • Iberia Parish is more prepared for hurricane season with year-round planning, investments in flood control structures, and an emergency alert system called Iberia Pins. President Larry Richard urged residents to prepare with supplies and evacuation routes because high tides can cause flooding — officials said.  KLFY
