CRIME NEWS

  • Lafayette police responded to a shooting before 8:30 p.m. Friday night on the 300 block of Adelma Street where a domestic dispute led 25-year-old Berrien Brown — the victim’s partner — to shoot his partner, injuring them and prompting his arrest on charges of attempted second-degree murder and firearm possession.  KATC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lafayette hosted its first LEGO convention at Blackham Coliseum this weekend—enthusiastic builders of all ages gathered to share their passion, with Brick Convention LLC marking the event as the 19th stop on its national tour where young fans like 9-year-old Pierre LeBlanc met LEGO Masters star Patrick Dunham.  KATC
  • After performing in California three years ago, Cajun musician Joel Savoy was asked by John Leopold to co-produce a tribute album to Clifton Chenier with Steve Berlin, linking his family legacy with classic Arhoolie Records recordings. Savoy gathered Acadiana musicians at Dockside Studios & worked with stars like The Rolling Stones to raise awareness and funds for a scholarship in Chenier’s honor.  The Current
  • Lauren Domingue, a Lafayette native and longtime fan of Big Brother 27, won Head of Household at an event at the Yard Goat. Her win gives her safety this week along with control over nominations while her family, including her mother Buffy, celebrated her achievement.  KLFY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Acadiana educators were honored today at the 19th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala. Principal Brandon Singleton of Grand Coteau Elementary was named Louisiana’s Elementary Principal of the Year — teachers Ali Angelle and Aaron Beaubouef also received top honors in their respective divisions.  KATC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana taxpayers will have until Sept. 6 to claim $16.9 million in refunds before the money is moved to the state's unclaimed property program, the Department of Revenue announced. Nearly 18,000 letters have been mailed to notify both individual and business taxpayers of the available refunds.  KATC

SPORTS NEWS

  • UL baseball head coach Matt Deggs is rebuilding his team after a 27 to 31 finish last spring by replacing 13 players lost to the transfer portal and losing his pitching coach to Southern Mississippi, and he has signed new talent such as Prairie View A&M shortstop/utility Tiger Donatto. He returns 15 players and plans further signings from Power 5, junior college and NAIA programs — preparing the roster for the 2026 season.  The Daily Advertiser
