COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center is joining the ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign by offering six zero-dollar adoption events with waived fees and free black wire crates for dog adoptions from August through October at 410 N Dugas Road. The first event is running today and additional events are scheduled for August 1 to 2, August 8 to 9, September 5 to 6, September 12 to 13, October 17 to 18 & October 24 to 25.  KATC
  • Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center is joining the ASPCA's Rescue Effect campaign to host six free pet adoption events from August to October at 410 N Dugas Road—dog adopters on select dates receive a free black wire crate and all fees are waived to help ease shelter crowding. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Broussard man, 40-year-old Marcus Landry, died in a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday near the intersection of Interstate 49 and Louisiana Highway 29 when his vehicle failed to yield and struck a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia — state police said the Freightliner driver was uninjured and the crash remains under investigation.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana implemented new traffic laws today that ban holding cell phones while driving—allowing officers to issue tickets for violations; the rules also include slower driving requirements in the passing lane, a minimum two-year sentence for hit-and-run offenses, and driver’s side window tint updates.  News 15
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson said Louisiana is making history in the House as the state now holds both top officer roles and key committee positions—his comments came during a tour of his 4th District in summer recess—highlighting Louisiana's growing influence in Washington.  The Daily Advertiser
  • U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields will host two town hall meetings for his 6th District Listening Tour — one on August 5th at 6:00 p.m. at Eunice City Hall and another on August 6th at 6:00 p.m. at Martin Luther King Recreation Center in Lafayette to let constituents share their thoughts, concerns, and ideas.  KATC
  • Lajaunie Road Bridge over Bayou St. Clair Lateral 1 will be closed starting Monday, August 4 for a $2 million project to replace the aging bridge with a new three-span concrete structure—detour routes on Maryview Farm Road, Moss Street, and East Gloria Switch Road will provide local access for residents and emergency vehicles during the roughly nine-month construction period.  News 15
