CRIME NEWS

  • Church Point police arrested Calvin Scott, 26, on Kelly St for charges of second degree murder, illegal carrying of a weapon by a convicted felon and illegal discharge of a firearm in connection with the July 7 shooting that killed Jiveston Hebert, 38—he was taken into custody without incident.  KLFY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 1, Louisiana put a law in place that raises fines for drivers lingering in the left lane on multi-lane highways—if you drive there without passing, you could face fines starting at $150 that increase on repeat offenses. Senator Jay Luneau said the new rule is meant to reduce high-speed wrecks by making it easier for police and courts to enforce driving laws.  KLFY

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU football finished its fourth preseason practice Saturday morning as players worked through injuries and tested new roles. Wide receiver Aaron Anderson missed most drills—while Chris Hilton Jr., PJ Woodland, and backup quarterback Ju'Juan Johnson from Lafayette Christian impressed the coaches—showing the team is ready to improve its run game ahead of the season opener against Clemson.  The Daily Advertiser
