- ➤ Lafayette Travel invites the community to submit nominations for the second annual Allons Awards—honoring outstanding achievements in Lafayette Parish's hospitality industry from October 2024 through October 2025. - ➤ The frottoir is a key instrument in Zydeco music that makes sound when its corrugated metal is rubbed, and it is also used in Cajun tunes—its design originated in 1946 when Clifton Chenier and Willie Landry first made a version in Port Arthur. - ➤ Lafayette Connections Academy offers free online classes for 4th–12th grade students that follow state education standards—providing live instruction, digital textbooks and a dedicated learning coach for each student. - ➤ St. Martin Parish Council voted this week to rename the 16th Judicial District courtroom in honor of assistant district attorney Shentell Brown, who was killed in a murder-suicide in February on Johnston Street+ her service in the juvenile court system made her a valued member of the legal community, and the name change will preserve her legacy for future generations. - ➤ City officials purchased the three-story Lemoine building on Jefferson St. for $6 million to house the new LFT Fiber customer service center using funds from a bond sale and prior year balances. The 42,175-square-foot property, which includes parking lots and space for several departments, will host a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Sept. 12 — city leaders approved the purchase by unanimous vote on Tuesday.
