COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A new animal cafe is coming to Lafayette's northside where owner Amy LeBlanc and co-founder Alex Pete will offer orphaned dogs and cats a home-like setting while they wait for adoption—features include a cat lounge, indoor and outdoor dog areas, and a space for community events. Proceeds will support animal care and enhance local community gathering. KATC
- ➤ On September 10, local legislators including Speaker Phillip DeVillier held a town hall at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium’s McElligott Club to discuss recent reforms, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted a free business conference at the LITE Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. In Jeff Davis Parish, Jeff Davis Electric conducted an electrical outage for upgrades from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—customers along Bellard Rd, Welsh Canal Rd, Arceneaux Rd, Martin Rd, Hwy. 99, David Rd, and Nelson Rd were affected. - ➤ Today, the Lafayette Fire Department will hold its 24th Anniversary 9/11 commemoration at 9:00 a.m. at Parc Sans Souci on 201 East Vermilion Street where first responders and the public will lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence — UL Lafayette will honor two alumni with a memorial event from 9:11 to 9:45 a.m. and Lake Charles will begin a flag-raising ceremony at 8:00 a.m. — both serve as reflective tributes to those lost during the attacks. - ➤ Stuller Inc.—headquartered in Lafayette—is the largest jewelry manufacturer in North America, where over 1,500 workers finish engagement rings for same-day shipping. The company is planning an expansion and is taking steps to boost its local presence and Louisiana’s economy. The Advocate

- ➤ South Louisiana Community College will host three career fairs in October and November to help students, alumni, and community members connect with employers in healthcare, STEM, and liberal arts at the Devalcourt Auditorium in Lafayette. SoLAcc’s Career Services will also hold a JCPenney Suit-Up Event on September 18 at the JCPenney store in Lafayette—offering discounted professional attire for participants preparing for upcoming interviews. - ➤ Alice Boucher Elementary has joined LPSS’s Accelerating Campus Excellence ACE program, which adds 30 extra minutes of daily instruction and optional 90 minutes after-school enrichment — funded by a three-year donation from the Pugh Family Foundation to boost support for students struggling at grade level. - ➤ University of Louisiana at Lafayette senior Frank Clavelle III was named one of only three nationwide recipients of the 2025 Space to Succeed Scholarship—recognizing his academic excellence and community service as he served as a student ambassador and mentored local youth. KATC

- ➤ Governor Jeff Landry and state lawmakers met with community leaders at a town hall at the McElligott Club at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium in Lafayette on Wednesday morning to review legislative reforms passed in recent sessions and discuss plans to improve public safety, education and economic opportunity. They also addressed concerns about property insurance and future actions to support local progress. KATC
- ➤ SafeSource Direct is facing layoffs with 541 employees at risk, and the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Regional Team with local partners has organized eight job support sessions from September 10 to September 18 while planning a job fair later this month. Broussard provided its Civic Center as the venue to help displaced workers access training, resume writing, and job placement resources—steps to reemploy valued local talent. KATC

- ➤ On September 2, Ochsner Health Center — Bertrand opened its new $35 million outpatient facility at 1100 Bertrand Drive to offer internal medicine, orthopedics, sports medicine and physical therapy. The facility was built with nearly 100 patient care rooms and is designed to expand specialty care in Lafayette. News 15
- ➤ Lafayette residents will take part in the Sickle Cell Walk/Run and Health & Wellness Expo on Sept. 13 at Graham Brown Memorial Park Trail to honor local warriors and raise awareness of sickle cell disease. Registration starts at 7 a.m.—the event will begin at 8 a.m. and will feature a free expo with educational resources, vendors, food samples, and a blood drive via the Vitalent Blood Bus, hosted by 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette Inc. and the Sickle Cell Association of South Louisiana.
