COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is open for the 18th Annual Charity Golf Classic, which will be held Friday, November 7, at The Wetlands Golf Course in Lafayette with registration at 8 AM and tee-off at 10 AM. Teams cost $600 and all funds raised will support Arc of Acadiana—helping local residents—.  KATC
  • Anita Begnaud, the former DDA director, was named leader of the Lafayette Resource Development Initiative—an effort to secure external funds for community projects in Lafayette. She returns home from Virginia and will build alliances with federal, state, philanthropic and corporate sources to drive local impact.  The Advocate
  • LASCC has joined with BISSELL Pet Foundation to offer reduced adoption fees of $70 or less through the Empty the Shelters event running today until October 15 at 410 N Dugas Rd—free adoptions are available for dogs and cats that are fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered.  City of Lafayette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SafeSource Direct in Broussard announced an additional layoff of 150 employees — raising its total layoffs to nearly 700 — after it cut 541 jobs a month ago; the company blamed poor market conditions for its planned shutdown. Workers rallied one day before the announcement, hoping to save the plant.  News 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • Silverback Improv and Cité des Arts will host the Lafayette Famous fundraiser on Saturday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Cité des Arts at 109 Vine Street in downtown Lafayette. The event will raise funds for KRVS — the voice of arts and culture in southwest Louisiana — to help offset a one-third cut in its operating budget.  KATC
  • Lafayette broke ground on a $4.68M amphitheater at Heymann Park on Sept. 29 that will transform the old baseball field into a venue for 5,000 people. The project will include a vendor pavilion, restrooms, and dedicated parking and will open in late 2026 — set to become a new cultural space for the community.  The Daily Advertiser

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UL eliminated six positions on Tuesday to address a $25 million deficit and restructured three divisions, including closing the Office of Sustainability and Community Engagement—changes meant to cut operating costs. Interim President Jaimie Hebert announced a town hall today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to update staff and discuss further expense reductions.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center—partnered with WildCat SpayNation for Dogs & Cats—will host its 15th Annual Drive-Through Rabies Vaccination Clinic for dogs on Sunday, October 5 at the CAJUNDOME where pet owners can get free rabies and DAPPv vaccines as well as limited $20 spay/neuter vouchers and cash-only microchipping services. Gates will close at 11:30 a.m. and entry is through Gate 8 off Congress Street.  KATC
  • Planned Parenthood clinics in Baton Rouge and New Orleans ended operations Tuesday after political pressures made it impossible to keep running even though they had provided key services like cancer screenings and birth control. Baton Rouge patient Brianna Spruel said she now must travel farther for care—clinic leaders blamed legal and political challenges for forcing the closure.  The Advocate
  • Doctors for Access is hosting a free prescription drive at Lafayette Internal Medicine Clinic located at 206 Energy Parkway on Friday, October 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. to help residents access vaccines—volunteer doctors say the state’s prescription rule blocks timely care and state action is needed.  KATC

  • Kayla Moten, a single mother in Lafayette, became a homeowner today with help from Habitat for Humanity and retired NFL star Warrick Dunn—who provided extra $5,000 down payment aid—and she expressed joy while unlocking her fully furnished home for her children.  News 15

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lafayette voters can choose from 65 high school football players on the ballot for the Daily Advertiser Midseason Player of the Year with voting open until Oct. 8. The players were selected based on submitted stats, rankings and Daily Advertiser Top 25 lists—the winner will be announced next week.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Five weeks into the high school football season in Lafayette Parish, seven teams remain undefeated while six teams have yet to earn a win as district play begins this week. Teurlings Catholic and St. Edmund’s face tough matchups with standout players like Jaden Celestine and Nathan Zaunbrecher — and Abbeville and Northwest aim to break their winless streak.  The Daily Advertiser
