CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Organizers are preparing for the annual Latin Music Festival that starts today and continues tomorrow to bring Latin American music and art to Acadiana. The event—founded by Luis Mora over 20 years ago—will have live music, dance and food to celebrate community culture. KATC
- ➤ Vermilionville will host Grand Réveil Acadien Families Day on October 14 with free admission and food and beverage sales. Attendees will enjoy a series of performances and cultural activities—like music, plays, and French tables—across several historic areas of the village. KATC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Storage Center is expanding its Space to Succeed scholarship program by awarding six students $5,000 each — three in Fall and three in Spring. The program honors academic excellence and community service, and fall applications close November 30. The Daily Advertiser
- ➤ The Lafayette Public Library announced Friday that it added Gale Databases to replace the removed EBSCO resources — a new collection offering over 50 online tools from academic articles to business and test prep support for local patrons. KATC
- ➤ Lafayette Parish School System approved a $30 million plan to remove portable buildings and build over 40 new classrooms at Broussard, Ernest Gallet and Westside elementary schools. The district will also upgrade Broadmoor Elementary with a new two-story building to replace 11 Butler buildings and will meet with engineers next week to schedule construction — a move to provide permanent facilities. - ➤ Today the Lafayette Fire Department partners with the National Fire Protection Association to launch a campaign that teaches residents to buy, charge, and recycle lithium-ion batteries safely to prevent home fires—while hosting fire safety classes, Safety House visits, fire truck displays, and a poster contest at local schools. The initiative aims to help the community manage battery risks effectively. KATC
- ➤ The federal flood insurance program went on hold after Congress let it lapse Tuesday night, leaving nearly 15,000 Lafayette Parish properties without coverage. Policyholders cannot renew their contracts until the program resumes—this delay may slow home sales in flood-prone areas. The Current

- ➤ A pop-up clinic in Lafayette is offering free COVID-19 vaccine prescriptions for residents 18 and older — new rules now require a prescription before getting the shot. Doctors for Access said more clinics will soon help neighbors overcome health care barriers. KATC
- ➤ Miles Perret Cancer Services is hosting its Pink and Purpose campaign during Givebacktober this October to support local cancer patients and survivors. The campaign features a pink-painted Lafayette Sign downtown—an invitation for community members to capture and share photos—and exclusive merchandise—officials said—with proceeds funding free care programs across Acadiana. - ➤ Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center has expanded its emergency room by adding 11 new beds—following the recent closure of the ER at Lourdes Heart Hospital on Kaliste Saloom Road. Doctors say the added beds help manage a 30% increase in patient visits over the past year. News 15
- ➤ On Sept 30, Nate's Fine Foods expanded its recall of pre-cooked pasta after a FreshRealm test found listeria—two cases have been reported locally while 20 people nationwide have fallen ill, and the FDA is working with the supplier to determine if more products need to be recalled.
