COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kiwanis Club of Acadiana will host its Zydeco Pancake Breakfast on October 11 at Parc International in downtown Lafayette from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.—tickets cost $10 and children under 10 may attend free with an adult ticket.  KATC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lafayette-based Sneaker Politics has partnered with ASICS to release a Louisiana-themed sneaker called the GEL-K1011 Live Oak, which will be available for sale at 9:00 a.m. Oct. 18 at all Politics stores and online. The design features an Earth-driven palette — a nod to the live oak trees known for withstanding hurricanes — and blends ASICS’ legacy of performance with modern lifestyle flair.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The UL Lafayette Symphony will host its annual Halloween concert on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Angelle Hall Auditorium—community members will enjoy classical pieces and a guest dance performance in costumes, with tickets costing $10 while UL Lafayette students, faculty and staff attend free with valid IDs.  The Daily Advertiser

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lafayette Economic Development Authority will host a free STEM fest for K-12 students on October 18 at the Dupuis Recreation Center—featuring over 60 interactive activities in science, technology, engineering and math. The event aims to inspire local youth to explore careers in STEM and spark new ideas for the future.  KATC
  • UL Lafayette announced that Joseph Savoie will transition from president emeritus to a full-time tenured faculty member in the College of Education in fall 2026 — following a six-month paid sabbatical, he will begin receiving the average of the top three salaries in the college on Jan. 1 next year. He served as president for 17 years.  KATC
  • Former UL president Joseph Savoie will shift to a full-time tenured faculty role in UL's College of Education starting in fall after his term as president emeritus ends on Dec. 31 + he will finish a six-month paid sabbatical before beginning his new position.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, PARC changed its hours so that Comeaux, Domingue, Martin Luther King and Thomas recreation centers will serve as polling sites for Saturday voting from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. PARC offices close at 4:00 p.m. today for Festival Acadiens et Créoles setup in Girard Park — regular programs will resume after voting ends.  City of Lafayette
  • Lafayette Parish residents will vote on April 18 to decide whether to renew the library tax that funds local operations with a 3.12 mill levy expected to generate $8.9 million annually over 10 years starting in 2027 — the tax increase is due to a recent property reappraisal.  The Advocate
  • Federal law forbids shooting down a drone over private property because doing so can lead to heavy fines or prison terms. Louisiana law also regulates drone use and sets penalties for unauthorized surveillance or for damaging aircraft — actions that put individuals at risk.  The Daily Advertiser

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown recluse spiders are found in Louisiana homes and show a distinct violin-shaped mark—experts warn that their venom can cause serious health issues if bitten. Homeowners are urged to reduce clutter, seal cracks, and call professional pest control if these spiders are spotted.  The Daily Advertiser
  • The Louisiana Department of Public Health warned residents to use licensed providers and FDA-approved botulinum toxin products after two patients in September became seriously ill following injections from unlicensed sources — officials advised anyone with symptoms like blurry vision, muscle weakness or trouble breathing to seek emergency care promptly.  KATC

  • On Oct. 9, Carencro football beat Lafayette 63-7 as star Chantz Babineaux scored touchdowns and made key interceptions—pushing the Bears closer to winning the Class 5A District 3 championship.  The Daily Advertiser
