COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Acadian Village in Lafayette hosted an early Halloween trick-or-treat event for children with special needs and their families — the event was provided free by LARC Acadian Village in partnership with Families Helping Families, the Dreams Foundation and the Acadiana Area Human Services District. Kim Royer said the event gave these children a safe space to celebrate the holiday.  News 15
  • Hospice of Acadiana launched its annual Making Memories Bright Poinsettia Sale to raise funds for end-of-life care—customers can order poinsettias online now through November 7 and pick up plants on December 5 and 6 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 2600 Johnston Street in Lafayette.  KATC
  • Lafayette Marshal Reggie Thomas was honored in Orlando for his leadership in youth and family service, receiving a national award for his community work. He chairs the Acadiana AMIkids Board and works with United Way and local schools — proving that determined local efforts earn national praise.  News 15
  • AOC Community Media will debut Nonprofit Narratives tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. on AOC1—this half-hour program spotlights Acadiana nonprofits and airs monthly to show the work and impact of local changemakers.  KATC
  • Louisiana residents can donate shoebox gifts filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for children in need as part of Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child event from November 17–24 — drop-off sites statewide will accept donations aimed at sharing hope with 12 million children.  The Daily Advertiser

  • Senior Helpers in Acadiana received national recognition when Fortune Magazine named it one of the 2025 Best Places to Work in Aging Services for the seventh consecutive year, and the company maintained its Great Place to Work Certified status. Since 2002, it has provided in-home care and runs programs such as Senior Gems for Alzheimer’s care—showing its commitment to quality senior services.  News 15

  • Lafayette residents can vote for the Daily Advertiser’s first-ever high school marching band award as bands play during Friday and Thursday Night Lights on game days. Voting ends Oct. 31—when the winner will be announced.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Al Hebert continues his food journey on Eat Lafayette’s Po-Boy Trail as he visits Acadian Superette in Lafayette to try the popular Bahn Mi Po-Boy sandwich+ he is sharing his local experience with food lovers.  News 15
  • Research from History and Social Justice at Tougaloo College shows that at least eight Louisiana towns may have been sundown towns—communities that once warned African Americans and other minorities to leave by sundown, with most evidence coming from oral histories rather than clear archival records.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Maison Freetown at 800 East Vermilion Street in Lafayette is opening the 'Picture the Power' exhibit Friday, Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m.—a free photography show by the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice that highlights Louisiana voting rights and civic engagement.  KATC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Louisiana Oil and Gas Association met in Lafayette to discuss the current state and future growth of the oil industry — members noted that falling prices have not slowed plans to boost local manufacturing and create more jobs. Economist Loren Scott forecasted 5,300 new roles in Lafayette over the next two years as service companies support the energy sector.  News 15

  • At Burke Elementary, students learn math in Spanish as part of a Spanish Immersion Program that honors Hispanic Heritage Month and integrates cultural traditions into daily lessons—teacher Mrs. Rio, with 24 years of teaching experience—has led the approach to build language skills and open new opportunities for students.  KATC
