COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Realtor Association of Acadiana hosted its annual gumbo cookoff at Parc International in downtown Lafayette—offering unlimited gumbo, live music, and a children's costume contest to support charities including CASA, St. Jude's fundraisers, and Acadiana Veterans Alliance.  News 15
  • The American Veterans Traveling Tribute will escort its replica Vietnam Wall along a 360ft long exhibit at Kinder starting November 2 at 10:00 a.m. before it opens to the public on November 3 and runs until November 7—while Lafayette will host a free Salute to Service event at Moncus Park on November 9 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. to honor local veterans with live music, food trucks and a special recognition.  KATC
  • The Salvation Army of Lafayette will host a Food and Diaper Giveaway this November because an expected lack of SNAP funding may leave many families needing extra help—organizers invite those in need to visit the site for support.  KATC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dave Williams from SeaD Consulting (which uses a special RightTest) tested shrimp at over 200 Louisiana spots to show that many restaurants falsely label imported shrimp as local, hurting local shrimpers. His test, which tells apart Gulf shrimp from vannamei, was shown on (Oct. 18) and supports new rules that require restaurants to list shrimp origin even though inspections remain weak.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ascension Episcopal School dedicated its football field as the Michael P. Maraist Memorial Field in a ceremony held before the Blue Gators varsity game. School leaders and Maraist’s family honored his legacy—sharing a video tribute, plaque unveiling, and ribbon cutting to celebrate his vision for the school.  KATC
  • The University of Louisiana at Lafayette faces a severe financial shortfall after adding 467 new jobs while undergraduate enrollment dropped by 1,700 since 2015, which led to a $20M revenue loss. The UL System Board met on October 23 and adopted new safeguards for a $25M deficit, and officials say UL will cut spending by at least 10% and plan further layoffs — steps to address rising fiscal challenges.  News 15
  • South Louisiana Community College will host the inaugural Limitless Auto Show on November 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at its Lafayette Campus at 320 Devalcourt Street — powered by Courtesy Buick GMC Lafayette, the event will let car enthusiasts check out displays, live demos, and tours of its Automotive Technology lab with a $25 entry fee paid at the event site.  KATC

  • Lafayette-area high school football continues with Week 8 games on Thursday and Friday while teams compete for wins as the regular season nears its end—Gueydan’s game against Westminister Christian Academy-Lafayette was cancelled over health concerns.  The Daily Advertiser
  • The Veterans Cup golf tournament will be held at the Jay & Lionel Hebert Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 25 to honor veterans. Brunch and registration start at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.—teams of three join for $100 per person.  KATC
