COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LFT Fiber received the ACA's 2025 Community Champions Award for its strong work in community service and historical preservation, and the award ceremony honored Lafayette native Maj. Fannie McClendon for her service in the 6888th Central Postal Battalion during World War II.  News 15
  • Neighbors in Duson helped market worker Sedrick Johnson by donating air conditioners and fixing his leaky roof after learning his living conditions had worsened. The generous act—sparked by neighbor Olivia Bozyone’s Facebook post—shows the community stepping up to support a familiar face at Champagne’s Market.  KATC
  • Jennifer Landry—a Lafayette mother who lost her daughter to domestic violence—now uses art, writing and herbalism to help at-risk youth and families build healthy communication through workshops. She turns personal tragedy into a path for healing and change.  KATC
  • Faith House, Lafayette’s largest shelter for domestic violence victims, received a $500 check from the Glenn Armentor Law Corporation on October 24th after being named Non-Profit of the Month for October—its services began in 1980 as a shelter for homeless women and have since grown to help anyone in need.  News 15
  • Lafayette hosts a busy weekend of events with family-friendly festivals such as the Sweet Dough Pie Festival in Grand Coteau, the Eagle Gumbeaux Cook-off in Youngsville, and the Louisiana Mosquito Festival in Cankton happening today—Boo at the Zoo runs through October and free mobile history tours operate daily. ECONOMY NEWS

  • A cow infected with New World Screwworm larvae was found 70 miles from the Mexican border in Sabinas Hidalgo, raising concern for Louisiana livestock. The USDA closed the border to Mexican livestock and is investing in sterile fly facilities—efforts aimed at reducing the risk of severe economic loss.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three gifted ARCA students—members of the MENSA top 2% IQ program—shared funny and clever replies in an interview at Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy. Their answers showed that learning and laughter can go together as they discussed favorite subjects and future dreams.  KATC
  • Today the University of Louisiana at Lafayette notified staff that 70 more employees will be affected—via position elimination, retirement or reassignment—to help cut a $25 million deficit. Supervisors will meet with affected employees Friday as part of ongoing efforts to achieve financial stability.  KATC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette drivers welcomed the opening of the Louisiana Avenue Extension on Friday, October 24, which connects East Butcher Switch Road to West Gloria Switch Road and eases congestion on the northside—featuring a new roundabout, upgraded bridge, and pedestrian sidewalks. The new four-lane road offers an alternative route for approaching the interstate and is expected to improve traffic flow for drivers and pedestrians.  News 15
  • The Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office holds over $900 million in unclaimed funds for current and former residents, with one in six residents possibly having unclaimed property. Residents can check online and submit claims for abandoned financial assets like uncashed checks or forgotten bank accounts — vehicles and real estate are not included.  The Daily Advertiser
  • Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Public Works Department announced that Glenn Lege Construction will begin a road resurfacing project on West Farrell Road on October 27, affecting 0.35 miles from Kaliste Saloom Road to Settlers Trace Boulevard. Motorists must follow detour routes via Settlers Trace Boulevard, Old Settlement Road, Kaliste Saloom Road and Ambassador Caffery Parkway while work continues for about three weeks—weather permitting.  City of Lafayette
