- ➤ Community members and local officials gathered Saturday morning outside Youngsville Sports Complex to dedicate a new military memorial honoring Steven L. Bennett (Youngsville's only Medal of Honor recipient) with speeches, a 21-gun salute and Vietnam-era flyovers. Bennett was posthumously awarded his honor for heroic actions during the Vietnam War. - ➤ Residents in an unincorporated area near Broussard raised concerns when a planned subdivision to build 146 homes was approved despite fears of increased flood risk and loss of quiet rural living—local officials are now planning to enforce stricter building rules using federal funds. The Current
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana Grass Roots, a documentary by Phyllis Baudoin Griffard and Jillian Godshall, highlights local efforts to preserve the Cajun Prairie and honor the region’s Cajun and Creole heritage. It will soon be released online and has been shown in community screenings with a future showing at the NUNU Collective on Nov 14 — additional screenings are planned at film festivals and in schools and libraries. - ➤ Festival International de Louisiane marks 40 years by publishing a 200-page bilingual commemorative coffee table book that documents the festival's history and cultural impact in Acadiana. The first copy was presented to Mayor-President Monique Boulet on Friday morning and a ticketed book launch will be held Nov.8 at Cavalier House Books with limited signed editions offered for $140 and regular editions available Nov.10. - ➤ A part of Girard Park is closed for a $17.6M sewer lift station project that will boost wastewater capacity for downtown, mid-city, and nearby neighborhoods—adding space for 2,000 units. Construction begins this month and will finish in October. KATC
