COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program is giving hope to local families as community members adopt a child to help provide Christmas gifts. One mother said the program changed her life and a local reporter joined in — showing the effort to brighten the holiday for many.  KATC
  • On Monday, veterans, community members and Walmart employees gathered at the Pinhook Road Walmart to celebrate Veterans Day and honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces—Northside High School students performed a tribute while American Legion Post 422 shared plans to secure grants for a new post to support local veterans.  KATC
  • On November 8, the 24 Hour Citizen Project held its ninth annual event at Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette—funding five community projects that include a global flavors festival, solar-powered food fridge installations, outdoor chess tables, a quarterly newspaper led by kids, and teen certification training. The projects received awards from $3,000 to $3,700 each, adding to nearly $187,000 in private funding for 42 citizen-led projects since 2016.  KATC
  • The fire department reminds local residents that the National Weather Service warns of dry conditions and wind gusts up to 25 mph—which can carry sparks onto dry grass—and advises avoiding outdoor burns and following city rules. Residents should keep fires contained, use metal screens over fire pits, and let ashes cool before disposal to prevent accidental grass fires.  KATC
  • Community members gathered Monday at the Blue Star Marker (installed in 1967) to honor military service members past, present and future; the event reminded locals of the high cost of service and the need to pass on the value of sacrifice to younger generations.  KATC

  • Acclaimed actor Roger Guenveur Smith will perform a play honoring artist Jean-Michel Basquiat at the Theater at Baranco and lead a workshop at Cité des Arts.   • Interim president Jamie Hebert of UL Lafayette said he is interested in joining the search for a permanent leader—sources noted that no formal search process has been set up yet, with the board holding a meeting tomorrow morning to discuss the matter. Ramesh Kolluru, the vice president for research, remains the front-runner as details continue to emerge.  The Advocate
  • UL Lafayette earned national recognition as a Purple Heart school today, honoring its support for veterans and military students. The university marked the milestone on the anniversary of its veteran center’s opening, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to those who served.  KATC

  • Drivers in Lafayette face disruptions as construction for the new sewer lift station has blocked access to Girard Park from South College Road — Girard Park Drive remains closed until December while crews install project piping.  News 15
