BUSINESS NEWS

  • Students at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette celebrated entrepreneurship with a two-day outdoor festival at Cypress Lake Plaza—showcasing student-owned businesses in music, gaming, fashion, and food while alumni joined to share their business successes.  News 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lafayette native John Chappuis, a longtime community leader in law and education, has been named the 2025 AcA Pelican Ball honoree. He has supported local arts by raising funds, establishing grant programs and serving on boards—efforts that have helped revitalize the downtown arts scene.  The Current

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Construction on a new classroom building and renovations at L.J. Alleman Middle is set to begin by the end of November. The project will replace portable classrooms with permanent ones and add a drive-thru lane for student drop-off and pick-up—expanding capacity to about 1,100 students.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux — upset that the Mardi Gras parade route was changed without his knowledge — has proposed a new ordinance that would require City Council approval for any route changes. The ordinance will be introduced at Tuesday's council meeting at 5:30 p.m. and would revise the Mardi Gras Activities Advisory Committee to take effect for the 2026 season.  KATC
  • Lafayette Utilities System announced new road closures for a downtown sewage project that will expand sewer capacity at the South Gravity lift station. The project closed a section of Girard Park Drive on Oct. 29 with work set to finish by end of January—additional lane closures on W St. Mary Boulevard will begin on Nov. 24—with one lane affected after Thanksgiving.  The Advocate
  • Lafayette tourism officials are negotiating a controversial 40-year lease of 5 acres from UL at $1 per year to develop a new indoor sports complex near Cajun Field parking lot—proposing a $40 million facility with 10 basketball courts and 20 volleyball courts. The agency expects the complex to attract about 140,000 visitors annually as discussions with UL continue.  News 15
  • St. Esprit Road is closed from Rue Des Estoiles to Catholique Road—about 0.4 miles long—starting today at 7:00 a.m. for drainage installation and road resurfacing expected to finish in about three months; drivers must follow detour signs via Rue Des Estoiles, Catholique Road, and Beau Bassin Road.  City of Lafayette
  • The UL board formed a committee to search for the next president of UL Lafayette at a special meeting last Thursday morning & the move followed the board’s bylaws despite earlier plans to bypass the formal search process.  The Advocate
  • Maurice Community Park remains closed for the rest of this week while crews work to level the parking lot, apply a soil cement overlay, and prepare for new asphalt—ensuring public safety. Town officials thanked residents for their patience as upgrades continue.  News 15

  • Students on the UL Quad participated in the 'Hold on to Hope' event hosted by NAMI, which raised suicide awareness and provided access to mental health resources—students honored loved ones by placing pictures and notes in backpacks—reflecting community support for mental health.  News 15

  • The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are using their mini bye to practice for a Thursday road game against Arkansas State in Jonesboro while facing weak defense due to suspensions – key players Tyree Skipper and Courtline Flowers will miss the season.  News 15
