Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 24th of November.
Good morning, Lafayette.
🏘️ Community
Volunteers began renovating the former Truman Early Childhood Education Center on Lafayette’s northside to convert it into the SUN Community Center—an affordable space for events and work—with plans to open in early 2027.
SUN Community Housing and local groups, including councilman Elroy Broussard, will launch a $2.5 million fundraising campaign in early 2026 to complete the project.
Families attended the annual Broussard Community Fair this weekend with carnival rides, games, raffles and local food booths.
The two-day 'Once Upon a Time' event was held in front of St. Cecilia School — Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and served as a major fundraiser for local parish and school programs.
🎓 Education
Renée Roberts, a longtime arts education advocate from Lafayette, began volunteering at the Acadiana Arts Council in the late 1970s—using spray-painted pasta necklaces to engage children and their families.
Her creative work led to art programs in 135 schools and an annual Pelican Ball that raises funds for arts education.
